CD album Deconstruction – Jack Jhonson

1. Overall Design

  •  What is the overall graphic/visual theme – what as TA are we supposed to ‘feel’ from looking at it?

The overall visual theme is modern and a bit retro; the TA could feel an acoustic and individual style from the album cover.

  • How does it appeal to the TA?

It appeals to the TA because as it is individual and unique, also he is compelling the artistic design.

How does it reflect on the artist/band and the genre?

It reflects the artist by showing that he is a solo artist and he is a musician, who plays for the music and not for the fame or money.

  • Has the CD cover reflected the ‘ethos’ of the band?

The CD reflects the ethos of the artist because it is different, quirky and artistic.

  • It is a simple promotional cover [i.e. an image of the artist] or is it more of an artistic comment on the artist [a Photoshop effected or illustrated design], or a combination of both?

The cover is a combination of both image of the artist and photo shop effect, because there is a conventional picture of the artist in black and white with the photo shop editing of the faded red, grey and black background.

2. Text

  •  What text is visible: name of album, any promo text, band name?

The text visible is the artists name and  the name of the album keeping it simple and classic.

  • How has the font and colour of the text effected meaning to TA or reflected its meaning?

The colour of the Artist name is white showing the classic side of the CD and making it standout against the Grey background whilst the album cover text is the same grey against the faded black area on the CD.

 3. Band branding

  •  How have the band/artist been represented through the logo design and style of cover?

The artist has been represented with a cool modern touch with the music very cantered as he is singing and has a guitar, portraying the classic solo artist.

  • How has the band logo achieved this? – Font, colours, design, effects?

The logo has the edgy fun font and the white colours showing the design effects of cool and modern, with a plain colour but it still stands out.

  • Has the album name reflected the band branding and ethos?

The album name has reflected the ethos of the artist because it stands out in a casual way which evidently could reflect he personality.

 4. Graphics & Photography

  •  What are the graphics?

The graphics are the faded colours in the background of the CD album and the picture of the artist in black and white,

  • What effects are used and what is the result?

The effects used are the colour fading in the background showing grey, black, red and an opal mint green. The result is a visually enhanced CD cover which catches the TA attention by putting colour and vibrancy to the album.

  • What colours and why? – meaning?

The colours used are grey, black, red and an opal mint green, keeping the colours simple and faded adds meaning to the CD album as it is casual and artistic.

  • Is there any photography [might not be of the band/artist, but of something else]? – What is it, what style, what effect on TA, what reflection it has on the artist’s ethos and image?

There is no other photography in the album cover keeping it simple and classily artistic.

  • Any other ‘graphical furniture’ i.e. extra images [photos are computer generated] – if so what, why?

There is a white star which was computer generated underneath the album cover as the album is called ‘sleep through the static’ the star represents the static and the meaning of the album.

  • Is the photography and /or design inspired by the name of the album or the artist/band or something else?

The photography could be inspired by the name of the album as the colours are quite faded and blurred together giving you the feeling of static.

  • What is the pose/facial motivation of the artist or image subject, mise-en-scene, lighting etc?

The facial pose is a slight smile but is quite hard to see as the main focus of the album cover is the instruments, the lightening was computer enhanced with the faded background colours although he is in black and white.
